PORT CLINTON, Ohio (AP) -- The New Year's Eve walleye drop in a northern Ohio town along Lake Erie may have been the last for the current version of the fiberglass fish.
Organizers of the quirky, annual event say the 600-pound walleye made of wood and fiberglass is starting to show its age and may be retired.
Folks in Port Clinton have been dropping a giant walleye from a crane to welcome the new year since 1996. Last year's event got air time on CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman."
Organizers of the walleye drop say the fish they use is about 16 years old.
They told the Port Clinton News-Herald they're looking at having a new walleye built with the same appearance.
