AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- A northeast Ohio city is providing financial help to a community organization working to develop its hometown University of Akron neighborhood.
The city of Akron has offered the financially strapped University Park Alliance a $600,000 loan guarantee.
In its last meeting of the year, the Akron City Council approved the guarantee.
Mayor Don Plusquellic (pluhs-KWEHL'-ihk), an alliance board member, says government agencies have invested $131 million in the area and want to protect the improvements.
According to the Akron Beacon Journal (bit.ly/19PIdOg), the alliance faces an uncertain future after the resignation of its executive director and cancellation of a $7.8 million foundation grant and loan.
The alliance was formed more than a dozen years ago to improve the struggling neighborhood around the Akron campus.
