CLEVELAND (AP) -- A man convicted of fatally shooting his ailing wife in her hospital bed says he understands what he did was a mistake.
"I admit it was a mistake to go off the edge like that," John Wise, 68, of Massillon told WKYC-TV on Friday after his sentencing in Akron. But Wise also said he "absolutely" believes what he did was what his wife wanted.
Asked if he had intended to kill himself after shooting her only to have the weapon jam, he responded, "I did."
The couple had discussed not wanting to be bedridden in their declining years.
His defense attorney, Paul Adamson, plans to seek clemency from the governor and has mounted an online petition drive in support of Wise.
Adamson said Wednesday in an email that it took time to arrange the online petition, but it's now set up.
The governor's spokesman declined to comment on the potential clemency issue.
