Ohioan who posed as animal vet gets early release

AKRON, Ohio (AP) -- A northeast Ohio woman convicted of posing as a veterinarian at a clinic has been released from prison after serving about half of her 18-month sentence.

Authorities said Brandi Tomko pretended to be an animal doctor in Akron to support a drug habit. She was convicted of animal-related offenses and drug-related crimes.

Tomko had posed as a vet from 2009 to 2011 at an animal hospital, where she drew blood, wrote prescriptions and performed animal surgeries despite not being properly licensed.

The Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/1cfCmCK ) reports a judge granted Tomko early release this week and put her on probation for two years.

Tomko's attorney says he's satisfied with the outcome of the case.
