GROVE CITY, Ohio (AP) -- Police in central Ohio say someone posing as an undercover deputy sought donations for injured officers and veterans in a scam that may have affected dozens of businesses.
The owner of a Grove City drive-thru convenience store told police a man requesting a donation Oct. 3 left the store when he was asked to show a badge or identification card.
That owner alerted a second business owner who was approached by the man. The second owner said he asked to see the man's ID, and the man left.
WBNS-TV reports investigators suspect dozens more small businesses were targeted in the alleged scam. The station says the drive-thru owner snapped photos of the man who approached him, and detectives have identified a person of interest in the case.
