CLEVELAND (AP) -- A Cleveland woman accused of putting the body of her dead 5-year-old daughter in the trash and then stealing $41,000 in benefits meant for the child has been sentenced to 16 months in prison for the theft of Social Security and other payments.
The U.S. attorney in Cleveland says 37-year-old India Parker was sentenced after pleading guilty to theft of government property and making false statements. Prosecutors say Parker will serve the federal sentence after a three-year state prison sentence for crimes that included tampering with evidence.
Authorities say Parker's daughter somehow died in late 2006, and Parker eventually put the remains in a trash bag later picked up by a garbage truck. The body wasn't found.
Parker's attorney, Samuel Amendolara, declined to comment Wednesday.
