KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia (AP) -- A message from Shaun White: Don't take his short hair as a sign he's no longer a rebel.

In fact, he says, it was a rebellious move to cut off his trademark red locks because everyone told him he couldn't.

But, White concedes, he does take life more seriously now at age 27 than he did when he made his Olympic debut as a teenager.

On Thursday, White begins his quest for double gold at the Sochi Olympics with the start of slopestyle qualifying.

Next Tuesday, he'll go for a third straight Olympic title in the halfpipe.

White says the halfpipe quest definitely carries a little more weight in his mind. He's trying to become the first American male to win three straight gold medals in the Winter Games.
