Rennes beat Valenciennes 2-0 to move into 4th spot

PARIS (AP) -- Rennes moved provisionally into fourth place in the French league after beating visiting Valenciennes 2-0 on Friday, with wingers Julien Feret and Jonathan Pitroipa setting up goals for each other.

Feret put Rennes ahead in the fifth minute when Pitroipa held up the ball inside the penalty area and pulled it back to Feret, whose shot shaved the left post on its way in.

Pitroipa then put Feret through in the 71st and he held off two defenders before slipping a pass back to Pitroipa -- who finished confidently. As well as creating a goal for each other, both players took their tallies to six league goals this season.

Rennes moved two points ahead of fifth-place Saint-Etienne ahead of this weekend's matches.
